Loc studio in Berkeley

Locs, from the first coil to the next retwist

We start locs and keep them. Begin with a consultation call: we'll agree the method and the size, then plan the visits that follow.

The loc journey

From a first call to your next retwist

A loc journey has stops. We plan the whole run with you, one stop at a time.

  1. 01
    20 min

    Step 1: Consultation call

A short call about your hair, the method and the size of your locs. We say what each choice asks of you.

  2. 02
    Half a day or more

    Step 2: Starter locs

Your first set, in one long visit or two. You leave knowing how to wash and sleep on them.

  3. 03
    A few visits

    Step 3: Settling in

The first months are for leaving them be. We check in, and we say when a retwist helps and when it doesn't.

  4. 04
    Every four to eight weeks

    Step 4: Maintenance

A retwist every few weeks, at the root, on a rhythm that suits your hair and your week.

The menu

Choose by what your locs need

Every service shows its time, and whether it starts with a consultation or takes a deposit.

Start locs

For a first set, whatever your length and texture.

  • Consultation call

    20 min

A call before anything is booked. We talk through your hair, the method and the size of your locs, and what the weeks after look like.

    Start here
    Book: Consultation call
  • Starter locs: comb coils

    3–4 hr

Coils shaped at the root with a fine comb, section by section, on hair of a length that holds a coil. A good fit for shorter and medium lengths.

    Consultation firstDeposit to book
    Book: Starter locs: comb coils
  • Starter locs: two-strand twists

    4–5 hr

Twists set in your own hair, sized and parted to the pattern we agreed. The twists settle into locs over the months that follow.

    Book: Starter locs: two-strand twists
  • Starter locs: interlocking

    5–7 hr

Each loc started and held at the root with an interlocking pattern, for hair that needs more hold from the first day. Long visit, planned in two parts if you prefer.

Keep your locs

For locs that are already going, new or years in.

  • Retwist

    2–3 hr

A wash, then each loc retwisted at the root with a fine comb and a light hold, as often as your locs ask. Comes with a conversation about when to come back.

    Book: Retwist
  • Retwist and style

    3–4 hr

A retwist, then a style to leave in: barrel twists, pinned loops, a low updo or a braided pattern.

    Book: Retwist and style
  • Interlock maintenance

    3–5 hr

Locs held with an interlocking pattern are re-interlocked at the root. Allow longer for more locs or longer new growth.

    Book: Interlock maintenance
  • Loc tidy

    60 min

A shorter visit between full retwists: the front, the nape and any loc that needs attention, with a wash if you'd like one.

    Book: Loc tidy
  • Wash and scalp care

    60–75 min

A slow shampoo, a scalp massage and a rinse, with your locs dried your way. Add it to any visit or book it on its own.

    Add-on
    Book: Wash and scalp care
  • Trim and shape

    45 min

Loose ends trimmed and the length evened out, with the outline shaped to suit you.

Keeping locs

Locs that have been going for years are welcome too

You don't have to start with us. Bring your locs from anywhere.

A retwist at the root, a tidy between visits, a new style or a plan for the next few months. We look at your locs, ask what's worked, and carry on from there.

Good to know

  • Locs started by anyone, in any method

  • A wash and scalp care with any visit

  • A plan for visits every four to eight weeks

What a visit felt like

“I called not knowing which method to pick. Dorine walked me through each one and what it would ask of me, and I booked once I knew.”

Journee B.Consultation call

“My locs have been going for a long time, and she works at the root without hurrying. I left with them neat and my scalp rested.”

Mozelle H.Retwist

“The first day was long. Auriel kept water and a chair ready between sections, and I knew how to wash and sleep on them before I left.”

Rawle S.Starter locs

“Having my next three visits booked means I never have to remember. The plan page said what each one covers.”

Before you book

What is a consultation call?

A short call, about 20 minutes, before a starter set. We talk through your hair, the method and the number and size of locs, and what you'll do between visits.

How long do starter locs take?

A few hours to most of a day, depending on the method, the length and the number of locs. Every starter service on the menu shows its time, and a longer set can be split into two visits.

How often should I get a retwist?

Most locs come back every four to eight weeks. The right rhythm depends on your hair, and we agree it with you, not for you.

Can you work on locs someone else started?

Yes. Tell us how they were started and how they've been kept, and we'll look at them at your first visit.

How much will it cost?

It depends on the number and size of your locs, the method and the time it takes. The booking page shows prices, and a written quote comes before a starter set.
